Ian Noble Tribute
  • Patrick Sutherland
  • Ian was a colleague of mine at LCP/LCC. We shared a love of documentary photography and of photography books. I worked with him and Russ Bestley on 'No Heroes: The Photographs of Roger Hutchings', which was beautifully designed and printed and is a lovely jewel of a book. I remember how quickly and confidently he drew out the overall concept of a book or a poster, how receptive he was to other ideas and especially how open and sharing he was about the whole process of design.

I remember his warmth and enthusiasm as well as his mischievous sense of humour. We used to mutter in conspiratorial tones in corridors or in committee meetings about inept systems and institutional failings, but any apparent cynicism reflected a very deep and passionate commitment to teaching, to students and to communicating the visual.

LCC was a much poorer place when he left and the world is a poorer place without him. I saw Ian at LCC a few months ago and we hugged. It was great to see him again. I miss him.
